Autumn Sage
Salvia Greggii
Growth Potential
Typically grows into a mounded shape, reaching 2-3 feet in height and width.
A True Texas Landscape Staple
A true Texas staple, Autumn Sage is a small, semi-evergreen shrub prized for its prolific and long-lasting blooms. Available in a wide range of colors including red, pink, purple, and white, it is a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies. Its aromatic foliage is also deer- resistant.
Best Area to Plant
The "Hot" Zone:
Perfect for those brutal south or
west-facing garden beds. It thrives in high-heat areas where other flowers wilt, such as along concrete driveways or stone walkways.
Butterfly & Hummingbird Waystations:
Plant it near a porch, patio, or kitchen window. Because it blooms nearly year-round (except for the dead of winter), you will have a front-row seat to constant pollinator activity.
Low-Maintenance Borders:
Its mounding habit makes it an ideal “mid-layer” plant-place it in front of taller grasses like Maiden Grass and behind low groundcovers like Silver Ponyfoot.
Raised Beds & Slopes:
Autumn Sage must have good drainage. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised stone bed or on a sloped area where water doesn’t pool. It hates “wet feet” during the winter.
Care Instructions
-
Light:
Needs full sun for the best blooming.
-
Water:
Drought-tolerant once established but appreciates occasional watering during extreme heat.
-
Soil:
Requires well- drained soil.
-
Pruning:
Prune back by about one-third in mid-summer to encourage a flush of new fall blooms. For a tidier appearance, cut it back to about 6 inches in late winter before new growth begins.
