Growth Potential

  • Height: 2–3 feet.

  • Width: 3–4 feet.

Fluffy Green Texture

Despite its name, this isn’t a true fern but a member of the asparagus family. It is prized for its unique, architectural “plumes” that look like fluffy green fox tails. It adds a wonderful soft texture and vibrant lime-green color to the landscape. While it can be tender in the colder parts of Zone 7, it is exceptionally hardy in Zones 8–9

Best Area to Plant

  • Location: Great as an accent plant in mixed borders, near water features, or in large decorative pots.

  • Placement: Perfect for areas with shifting light, such as under the canopy of a large Live Oak. It also works well in entryway planters where its unique shape can be appreciated up close.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

    Part shade to filtered sun. In Texas, it appreciates protection from the harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the needles.

  • Water:

    Moderate. It has tuberous roots that store water, making it surprisingly drought-tolerant once established, but it looks best with regular watering

  • Soil:

    Well-draining, nutrient-rich soil amended with compost and expanded shale, making them an excellent choice for North Texas landscapes.

  • Pruning:

    Very low. Simply snip off any yellowing or brown stems at the base. In Zone 7, be prepared to mulch the crown heavily or move containers indoors during a hard freeze.
