Growth Potential

  • Dwarf (e.g., ‘Purple Pixie’): 1–2 feet tall, spreads 3–4 feet.

  • Mid-Size (e.g., ‘Ruby’, ‘Ever Red’): 4–6 feet tall and wide.

  • Tall (e.g., ‘Zhuzhou Fuchsia’): 10–15+ feet tall (can be trained as a small tree).

The Showstopper Shrub

Loropetalum is a versatile evergreen shrub beloved for its year-round color and unique, “fringy” blooms. While the traditional species has green leaves and white flowers, the most popular varieties in Texas feature deep burgundy or purple foliage with electric pink or fuchsia flowers that appear heavily in spring and sporadically through fall.

Best Area to Plant

LoCation:

Foundation plantings, privacy screens, or mixed into a perennial border for winter color.

Placement:

In the Texas heat, it performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade. While it can tolerate full sun, its color may fade to olive-green, and leaves can scorch in August.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

    Filtered sun to part shade (ideally 4–6 hours of morning sun).

  • Water:

    Moderate. It is fairly drought-tolerant once established but needs consistent moisture during summer dry spells.

  • Soil:

    It prefers slightly acidic soil. If your soil is heavy North Texas clay, amend it with compost or expanded shale to ensure good drainage and prevent yellowing (chlorosis).

  • Maintenance:

    Naturally graceful arching habit. If pruning is needed for size, do so immediately after the spring bloom so you don't cut off next year's flower buds.
