Evergreen Simplicity

A tight, mounding evergreen that is the “workhorse” of North Texas landscaping. It has small, dark green leaves and a naturally rounded shape that requires very little pruning to stay neat. Unlike standard hollies, the dwarf version rarely produces berries but is prized for its indestructible nature.

Best Area to Plant

Location:

Low hedges along driveways, foundation plantings under low windows, or as “fillers” in formal garden beds.

Placement:

It is highly adaptable and thrives in full sun to part shade. It is one of the few shrubs that can handle the heavy alkaline clay common in North Texas without complaint.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

    Full sun to partial shade.

  • Water:

    Low to moderate. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant.

  • Maintenance:

    Very low. If you want a formal look, shear it once a year in late spring. Otherwise, let it maintain its natural soft mound.

  • Soil:

    Thrives in well-drained sandy, loamy, or clay soil and adapts well to most North Texas soil types, provided drainage is good.
