Forms clumping mounds 12–18 in tall and 18–24 in wide. Moderate growth rate — spreads slowly by rhizomes to fill in over time. Flower spikes rise above the foliage in late summer, followed by small black berries in fall.

Incredibly adaptable, it thrives in conditions that defeat most plants — dense shade, poor soil, drought, and heavy clay — making it a go-to workhorse for Texas landscapes.

Best Area to Plant

Under trees and shaded areas:

Liriope is one of the best solutions for dry shade under large trees where grass and most groundcovers refuse to grow. It handles root competition and low light with ease.

Borders and edging:

Its neat, clumping habit makes it a classic edging plant along walkways, driveways, and bed borders. It creates a clean, defined line with minimal upkeep.

Care Instructions

Light:

Full sun to deep shade. One of the few plants that performs well in both extremes, though foliage is lusher in part shade.
Water:

Drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly the first season; after that, minimal supplemental watering needed except during extended dry spells.
Pruning:

Cut or mow foliage back to about 3–4 in in late February before new growth emerges — this keeps it looking fresh all season. Divide clumps every 3–4 years if overcrowded. Fertilize lightly in spring.
