Growth Potential

As a vine, climbs 15–20 ft given support. As a groundcover, stays 12–18 in tall and spreads several feet wide. Moderate growth rate — faster in warm climates. Blooms heavily in spring through early summer with sporadic blooms possible through fall.

Best Area to Plant

Fences, trellises, and arbors:

Star Jasmine is at its showiest when trained to climb. It quickly covers fences and structures with dense, fragrant foliage and a spectacular spring bloom display — ideal near patios or entryways where the scent can be enjoyed up close.

Slopes and cascading walls:

Left unsupported, it spills beautifully over retaining walls, raised beds, or slopes, creating a lush cascading effect with minimal maintenance.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

    Full sun to partial shade. Blooms most prolifically in full sun; partial shade produces lush foliage with moderate flowering.

  • Water:

    Moderate. Water regularly until established, then drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged soil — good drainage is essential for healthy roots.

  • Soil:

    best in well-drained loamy or clay soils and adapts exceptionally well to the heavy clay and alkaline conditions common throughout North Texas.

  • Pruning:

    Prune after the spring bloom flush to shape and control size. Train vines onto a trellis or fence with ties when young. Fertilize once in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Watch for scale insects — treat with horticultural oil if needed.
