Canyon Creek Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Canyon Creek'

Growth Potential

Height: 3-4 feet | Width: 3-4 feet

Color-changing leaves and blooms all summer

Canyon Creek Abelia is a tough, compact shrub that does well in North Texas heat and clay soil. Its new growth is coppery-orange, shifting to green, then bronze in fall, and soft pink and white flowers cover it from late spring to frost.

It stays small and rounded, so it needs little pruning and works in places where larger abelias would outgrow their space.

Best Area to Plant

Location:

  • Foundation plantings
  • Mixed shrub borders
  • Along fences and walkways
  • Pollinator-friendly beds

Placement:

Plant in full sun to part shade, spaced 3 to 4 feet apart. It blooms and colors best with at least 6 hours of sun. Keep it a couple of feet from walls and walkways so it can fill out without crowding.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

Full sun to part shade. More sun means more flowers and richer foliage color.

  • Water:

Water regularly the first summer. Once established it is fairly drought tolerant and does well with a deep soak every week or two in the heat.

  • Maintenance:

Low maintenance. Trim lightly in late winter to shape it and remove any frost-damaged tips. No heavy pruning needed.
