Phlox paniculata
Growth Potential
Height: 2-4 feet | Width: 1.5-2.5 feet
Big, fragrant summer flowers in pinks and whites
Garden Phlox is a classic summer perennial that brings full, fragrant flower clusters to North Texas beds when the heat sets in. It comes in white, pink, lavender and more, and butterflies and hummingbirds visit it often.
It does best with a little care in our humid summers, but a good spot with airflow and regular water rewards you with months of color.
Best Area to Plant
Location:
- Middle or back of sunny flower beds
- Cottage-style borders
- Butterfly and hummingbird gardens
- Near patios where the fragrance can be enjoyed
Placement:
Plant in full sun to light afternoon shade, spaced 18 to 24 inches apart so air can move between plants. Good airflow helps prevent powdery mildew. Keep it away from crowded plantings and from dry, baked spots along hot walls.
Care Instructions
-
Light:
Full sun to light afternoon shade. Afternoon shade helps in the hottest part of the summer.
-
Water:
Needs regular, deep watering, especially in summer. Do not let it dry out completely, but avoid soaking the leaves.
-
Maintenance:
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Cut back after flowering and in late winter, and divide clumps every few years. Choose mildew-resistant varieties.
