Cool-season color from fall through spring
Snapdragons are one of the best cool-season annuals for North Texas. Planted in fall, they bloom through mild winters and spring in a wide range of colors, then fade when summer heat arrives.
They add upright color to beds and pots when most summer flowers are done, and they make a lovely cut flower.
Best Area to Plant
Location:
- Front and middle of sunny beds
- Containers and window boxes
- Cutting gardens
- Entry beds for winter and spring color
Placement:
Plant in fall in full sun, about 8 to 12 inches apart, in well-drained soil. Improve heavy clay with compost. Keep them away from spots that stay soggy in winter and plan to replace them with heat-tolerant flowers in late spring.
Care Instructions
-
Light:
Full sun, at least 6 hours a day.
-
Water:
Water regularly, about once or twice a week depending on rainfall. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
-
Maintenance:
Pinch young plants for bushier growth and deadhead spent spikes to keep blooms coming. Protect with a cover during hard freezes. It is a cool-season annual and fades in summer heat.
