Texas' Toughest Blooming Native

A tough-as-nails native shrub with silvery-gray foliage. It is called the “Barometer Bush” because it bursts into purple blooms right before or after a rain due to changes in humidity. It is one of the most drought-tolerant plants available for Texas.

Best Area to Plant

  • Location: Xeriscapes, privacy screens, or as a silvery contrast against green-leaved plants.

  • Placement: Must be in full sun. It is perfect for high-heat areas like parking strips or west-facing walls.

Care Instructions

  • Light:

    Full sun (it will get leggy and won't bloom in shade).

  • Water:

    Very low. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

  • Soil:

    Prefers well-drained sandy, rocky, or alkaline soil and performs best in dry conditions with excellent drainage.

  • Pruning:

    Prune lightly to maintain shape; it can be sheared into a formal hedge or left natural for a "Hill Country" look.
